11-bit Studios has just responded to allegations that it used AI-generated content in its recently released base-builder, The Alters. As spotted in Eurogamer yesterday, AI text prompts were spotted on an in-game monitor visible inside the player’s base. Evidence of AI-generated language localization also appeared in alternate versions of some in-game videos you can watch.
In a statement, 11-bit said it used AI-generated assets as works in progress, and had mistakenly left one in the shipped game. It also admitted to using AI-powered translation tools for “additional last minute translations.”
It’s unclear what this means for the game on Steam, which has a disclosure policy on games that use AI-generated content. Since early 2024, games on the platform must disclose if they contain pre-generated content (including “art/code/sound etc.”) or live-generated content. Developers must list those aspects in the content survey they submit alongside their game.
11-bit apologizes for not disclosing its AI use
The statement goes on to note the production decisions that led to AI-translated text in subtitle translations for its in-game movies.
“Due to extreme time constraints, we chose not to involve our translation partners and had those videos localized using AI to have them ready on launch,” it says. “It was always our intention to involve our trusted translation agencies after release as part of our localization hotfix, to ensure those texts would be handled with the same care and quality as the rest of the game. That process is now underway, and updated translations are being implemented.”
It notes the specific stats for the translated text, then admits the decision was “the wrong call” in hindsight. “Even more so, no matter what we decided, we should have simply let you know.”
The incident comes just days after Frontier yanked out the AI-generated portraits from Jurassic World Evolution 3 after being called out by fans.
