We’re slogging through July, which is usually a pretty slow month for gear. All we’ve seen is new entry-level gear come to the North American market.
The last 3-4 months of 2025 are going to be when we see major product announcements/shipping from Canon, which is the way 2024 went for Cinema EOS and RF lenses.
There are some issues that may change plans for product releases, but everyone knows what those issues are by now.
New Lens
We have been told by a very reliable source that Canon is scheduled to announce a “Never-before-seen zoom lens from Canon” The lens in question is not of the “big white” variety, but more a “general” use lens. We may have a slightly different idea of what a general use lens is, but I think it sits somewhere in the 16-135mm focal range
There have been mentions of a replacement for the RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, and with Sony releasing their version at about half the weight, maybe there’s something to this idea?
What would make it different? Start at 24mm. An RF 24-70mm f/2L with a smaller size and much lighter would be a welcomed addition to the lineup and could get more people to spend the $3000+ that it would cost.
There’s a big difference between 24mm and 28mm when it comes to designing fast zoom lenses when you’re trying to control size and weight.
Something completely new?
A 24-70 f/2L is just one “obvious” possibility, but it could end up being something else completely. It could be some kind of sub-f/2 zoom lens?
We’re also considering that it was said whether or not the lens would be for APS-C or Full-Frame. While Canon does need some cool APS-C lenses in the RF-S lineup, we’re not sure releasing a “first ever” lens for crop cameras seems like the Canon thing to do.
Information should start flowing more freely as we get closer to the end of August, but there are some other interesting things that we hope to be able to write about in the near future.
I’d take this one with a little less salt than usual.
