AMD confirms Radeon RX 9000 series launch in March

The long-awaited RDNA 4-based AMD Radeon RX 9000 GPUs have finally received a confirmed launch window. AMD’s David McAfee announced that the new series, including the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, will officially debut in March 2025. This confirmation puts to rest speculation about a January release, as hinted at by earlier leaks.

The RX 9000 series is poised to be one of the best value bringers of the year; with its vast improvements to FSR 4 and performance uplifts from the new GPU die, we could be in for a real treat. It will be interesting to see how the 9000 series stacks up against the RTX 50 series.

Why the delay?

While AMD initially teased its RDNA 4 GPUs during CES 2025, they opted for a dedicated reveal event to give the lineup its deserved spotlight. Rumours suggested that some partners and retailers had been preparing for a late January release, with pre-order dates floating around the 23rd–25th. However, AMD appears to have revised its strategy—possibly to refine pricing, ensure better supply, or strategically position the cards against NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series, which lands in February.

The slight delay could be a calculated move, especially with whispers of the RX 9070 XT aiming to rival NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 Ti and even the RTX 4080. If AMD delivers on its rumoured performance levels, the extra time spent ensuring competitive pricing and availability might pay off in the long run.

What to expect in March

The Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 are expected to spearhead the RDNA 4 lineup, boasting significant architectural upgrades. AMD has also confirmed the launch of FSR 4 alongside these GPUs. With machine-learning-powered enhancements, FSR 4 is positioned as AMD’s direct response to NVIDIA’s DLSS 4. And while NVIDIA plans to extend some DLSS 4 features to older GPUs, AMD might hold an edge by offering broader support for FSR 4, even on competitor hardware.

Additionally, AMD could bundle these GPUs with their upcoming Ryzen 9 9000X3D CPUs, creating an attractive all-AMD ecosystem for gamers.

AMD’s competitive landscape

The Radeon RX 9000 series faces fierce competition, with NVIDIA dominating the high-end GPU segment and Intel making strides in the entry-level space with its Arc B-series. However, AMD remains firmly in the race, aiming to capture attention in both the mainstream and high-performance markets.
