Canon is adding password protection to 10 EOS R cameras via a firmware update. This is a feature that has been asked for for years, as people seem to think that this will help prevent theft.
I have a photographer friend that was held up at gunpoint coming out of the Buenos Aires airport. I know multiple wedding photographers that have had bags snatched during the event. A password protected camera would not have prevented their gear from being stolen. The lenses inside your bag or on your camera will be worth enough to make the heist worthwhile.
Optics is good marketing though.
Just don’t think it makes your gear any safer if you’re not mindful. The most important thing is to make sure your content is stored somewhere other than inside your camera bag. Insurance can’t bring your work back.
I’m playing Devil’s Advocate perhaps, but there will likely be a lot of overly positive coverage of this new feature. Smartphones are being stolen in record numbers to steal from your bank account. They’re apparently the most locked down electronic device on earth.
It’s also smart to have insurance beyond a rider on your home insurance. The policies are affordable a lot easier to make a claim on.
If passwords help you sleep better at night, that’s great.
How long will it take to annoy most people to the point of using “Don’t Ask Again?”
How Does it Work?
