LumaFusion 5.3 Opens Doors to Third-Party Plugins with New Architecture and CoreMelt Partnership

LumaTouch introduces plugin support for the first time in LumaFusion’s history, while releasing LumaFusion 5.3 with enhanced workflow features.

LumaTouch is introducing a new plugin architecture that enables third-party developers to create plugins for LumaFusion on iOS for the first time. With this announcement, the mobile editing platform moves closer to desktop-level functionality. (Check out our past coverage of LumaFusion here.)

First third-party plugin: CoreMelt’s PaintX for LumaFusion

CoreMelt has become the first developer to take advantage of this new architecture, creating PaintX for LumaFusion exclusively for iOS users. The plugin brings professional-level paint and planar tracking capabilities directly into the LumaFusion timeline, addressing common post-production challenges that mobile editors have long faced.

PaintX for LumaFusion is designed as a powerful paint tool with built-in tracking functionality, specifically engineered to provide LumaFusion users with quick-fix capabilities integrated seamlessly into their existing workflow. The plugin enables editors to remove skin blemishes, paint out unwanted objects like power lines or antennas, and perform other detail work that previously required desktop applications.

The plugin is available as an in-app purchase for $19.99 USD, with all proceeds going to CoreMelt (after Apple’s cut, obviously).

LumaFusion 5.3 brings workflow enhancements

Alongside the plugin architecture announcement, LumaTouch released LumaFusion version 5.3 for iOS, incorporating several workflow-enhancing features based on user feedback. The update includes highly requested functionality such as the ability to add transitions to multiple selected timeline clips by simply double-tapping the transition in the Library.

Other notable improvements in version 5.3 include a reorganized Color and Effects Editor Presets Library, where Blurs, Styles, and Distortions are now consolidated into one button to accommodate third-party plugins. A new search feature allows editors to find presets by name, while timeline functionality has been expanded to support adding head and tail transitions or cross dissolves between multiple selected clips.

The update also introduces practical interface improvements, including adjustable track height settings and new preview options for Library clips that can match the Timeline’s fit mode.

Creator Pass subscribers get new content

LumaFusion Creator Pass subscribers receive additional benefits with this update, including three new transition sets: Circular Wipes, Mod Lines, and Anchor Slides. The Creator Pass, previously known as “Storyblocks for LumaFusion,” maintains its $9.99 monthly or $69.99 annual pricing while expanding its feature set.

The subscription includes advanced features like Speed Ramping with keyframe control, Enhanced Keyframing with Bézier curve path editing, support for 12 tracks of video and audio, Adjustment Clips, Multicam Studio (iOS only), and FCPXML Export (iOS only). For users preferring one-time purchases, these enhanced features are available individually for $19.99 each.

Opening the platform to developers

The introduction of third-party plugin support represents a strategic shift for LumaTouch, bringing LumaFusion 5.3 closer to the extensibility that professional desktop editing platforms have long offered. The company has indicated that other plugin developers interested in creating applications for LumaFusion can contact the development team directly.

This move positions LumaFusion to potentially compete more directly with desktop editing solutions while maintaining its mobile-first approach. The success of CoreMelt’s PaintX plugin could serve as a proof of concept for other developers considering LumaFusion plugin development.

LumaFusion 5.3 remains available across multiple platforms, including Mac, iOS, Android, and ChromeOS, with a base price of $29.00 USD. The app continues to be developed by LumaTouch’s team of engineers, designers, and video professionals focused on serving the creator community.

The combination of new plugin architecture and workflow improvements in version 5.3 suggests LumaTouch is positioning LumaFusion for continued growth in the increasingly competitive mobile video editing market, where the line between mobile and desktop capabilities continues to blur.

LumaFusion – and mobile editing on the iPad – have come a long way

A video we published over six years ago about the LumaTouch workflow on iPad became extremely popular with over 217,000 plays – this showed me how popular mobile editing really is.

In the meantime, Apple has caught up and offers Final Cut Pro for iPad (review of the Live Multicam feature here), and also finally opens up iPad OS to be more desktop-like with the upcoming iPad OS 26, which will make it easier to use an iPad as an editing machine (because of background rendering mostly). Surely LumaFusion will make good use of this capability in the future too.

Are you a LumaFusion user, or do you prefer Final Cut Pro for iPad? Let us know in the comments below.
