Nikon has produced some exceptional lenses over the past few years. Some examples include the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8E ED VR, AF-S Nikkor 50mm f1.8G, and AF-S 500mm f5.6E PF ED VR, each designed for different photographers’ needs. With the new mirrorless system, the company has many good replacements. To expand the new technology, the company has filed a patent for a new zoom, which will be perfect for hybrid creators.
According to Asobinet, the company is working on a patent showcasing a new wide-angle zoom lens, the 18-24mm f5.6. The patent number P2025109883 was launched on July 25, which will feature an internal Zoom. This is important as it allows one to shoot images without losing form or compactness.
Example 1
- Focal length: 18.400-23.400
- F value: 5.720
- Angle of view: 100.18-85.74
- Image height: 19.629-21.050
- Total length: 49.452
- Back Focus: 8.581-13.436
Nikon does not currently have any lenses in this range for full frame users. The company has launched 18-140mm but that’s for APS-C users. Furthermore, the patent suggests that it will be for a full-frame system and not for APS-C, thus helping photographers in architecture, landscape, and videography to expand their horizons. A lens like this can be useful for those who travel, since they want something compact.
However, the f/5.6 aperture can be a drawback for many users. It’s too small to be used at night, so perhaps, a lens like this will be aimed at beginners or enthusiasts rather than professional photographers. If this is also the case then the lens has to be cost-effective. While not every patent becomes a reality, this could be important for those who prefer using first-party lenses over third-party ones.
The company already has some exciting lineup, such as Nikon 50mm f1.4 Z and 35mm f1.4. Both lenses are quite exciting, offering great performance at an affordable rate. As we said in our review of the 35mm, “The autofocus is fast — but it could be more accurate depending on the camera that you’re working with. The image quality is beautiful while not being overly sharp and emphasizing how nice the bokeh is. It’s also weather resistant — which means that it’s going to be reliable. In fact, overall, this lens is pretty perfect for anyone that’s been really bored of the sterile image quality brands have been putting out.”
Nikon has a very long way to go. But patents like these showcase the company’s commitment to offering a wider range to users. If Nikon can listen to what users want, then it will have a win-win situation. Otherwise, third-party lenses will be the most obvious choice.
