Nvidia introduces Smooth Motion, a driver-based frame gen AI for RTX 50 GPUs

Nvidia has quietly introduced a new feature called Smooth Motion in its latest GeForce Game Ready driver update. This driver-based frame generation AI model is designed exclusively for the new RTX 50 series graphics cards, enhancing gameplay smoothness by interpolating an additional frame between two rendered frames. The feature was not previously announced but has been rolled out alongside major updates, including DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation and new Override functionality.

How Smooth Motion works

According to Nvidia (via WccFTech), Smooth Motion can be enabled globally or per game for compatible DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 titles. Users can activate the feature in the Nvidia app by navigating to Graphics > Program Settings, scrolling to “Driver Settings,” and toggling Smooth Motion on. The technology is designed to work across games running at native resolution, with super-resolution technologies or other scaling techniques, effectively doubling the perceived frame rate.

This positions Smooth Motion as Nvidia’s counterpart to AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames 2. However, unlike AMD’s implementation, Smooth Motion is built on an AI-driven model, leveraging Nvidia’s deep expertise in artificial intelligence. In addition to Smooth Motion, Nvidia’s latest driver is optimized for several upcoming and newly released titles:

• Kingdom Come: Deliverance II will be launched soon with DLSS Super Resolution support.
• Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is now available on PC with DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, DLAA, Reflex, and ray-traced ambient occlusion, shadows, and reflections. DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation will arrive in a future update.

Additionally, Nvidia has improved RTX Video Super-Resolution with a more efficient AI model that reduces GPU resource usage by up to 30% at its highest quality setting. The feature now also supports upscaling HDR videos, ensuring lower-resolution HDR content in web browsers is automatically enhanced to match the display’s native resolution.

When set to Auto Quality, a new GPU Utilization feature has also been added for RTX Video Super Resolution. By adjusting GPU Utilization to High, users can maximize the available GPU power to deliver the best possible upscaling quality based on their installed hardware.
