Prism Lens FX has introduced two innovative handheld filter systems—the Phantom FX and Spectre FX—that promise to bring motion blur and ghosting effects directly into camera during shooting. These filters offer shooters tactile control over stylized visual effects without relying on post-production workflows. Let’s take a closer look.
Prism Lens FX has announced two new handheld filter systems designed to create motion blur and ghosting effects directly in-camera. The Phantom FX and Spectre FX filters offer filmmakers practical alternatives to post-production effects, enabling real-time creative control during shooting.
The Phantom FX: motion blur in realtime
The Phantom FX filter creates what the company describes as a “ghosting motion blur” or “slow shutter” effect when held directly in front of the lens. The handheld design allows operators to move the filter during shooting, providing control over the exact look and intensity of the effect through positioning and movement.

Available in both 100mm and 150mm sizes, the Phantom FX comes in two strength options: half and full. The smaller 100mm version targets compact setups including mirrorless and DSLR cameras, while the larger 150mm variant is designed for professional cinema rigs.
The Spectre FX: focused center with peripheral effects
The Spectre FX takes a different approach to motion blur effects. Its design features a flat, clear center section that maintains subject focus, while four surrounding sections create ghosting blur effects around the frame’s edges. This configuration allows the central subject to remain sharp while peripheral motion appears streaked or ethereal.
Like the Phantom FX, the Spectre FX is available in 100mm and 150mm sizes. Both filter systems include a 1/4-20 threaded mounting hole, giving users the option to mount the filters on rigs rather than operating them handheld.
Practical application and creative control
The handheld nature of both filters introduces what proponents call “tactile filmmaking,” allowing operators to dodge, move, and manipulate effects in real-time. This approach differs from traditional screw-on filters by providing dynamic control over effect placement and intensity during the actual shot.
The company positions these tools as alternatives to digital post-production techniques, appealing to filmmakers who prefer capturing stylized looks in-camera rather than adding effects in post.

Why we think these filters are a great idea
These new releases reflect ongoing interest in practical, in-camera effects tools within an increasingly digital production environment. For creators seeking to achieve motion-based visual effects without relying on post-production workflows (or: not being in control of that post-production if you are only on set as a shooter), Prism Lens FX’s offerings provide accessible entry points at relatively modest price points.
The filters join Prism Lens FX’s existing catalog of practical effects tools, continuing the company’s focus on providing filmmakers with hardware solutions for creative visual effects.
Pricing and availability
Both the Phantom FX and Spectre FX filters are currently available for pre-order through Prism Lens FX’s website. Pricing is set at $169.99 for 100mm versions and $189.99 for 150mm versions across both product lines.
The company estimates a 10-12 week fulfillment window before shipping begins. All four size and strength combinations for each filter type are available for pre-order.
