Perfect Protein Powder
Tastes great, dissolves well – no chalky unpleasantness – high protein, low sugar. Wish they made single size travel packets.

Best so far
This is the best I’ve come upon so far if your goal is to obtain added protein without any of the things you don’t want. Many others have one gram of sugar…if you need 90 gr of protein, that would not pass muster. Many are sickeningly sweet. This one with no sugar is best for me. The only improvement I would welcome is that the protein Amount be increased. The taste is nice, not too sweet. The chocolate tastes just chocolate milk. I’ve now blended it with fresh strawberries and a couple of supplements that I take, as well. A clear 5.

Perfect in Every Way
Finding the right protein powder has been a trial for me. I don’t eat much meat or soy, and I’m a tall, active woman, so I have difficulty meeting my daily recommended protein intake â more importantly, when I haven’t had enough protein, I feel HUNGRY. I hate the taste of brown rice protein (which is often high in heavy metals, anyway), I really dislike stevia, the idea of whey freaks me out, AND I have celiacs â any processed powder that isn’t certified gluten-free at below 10 ppm usually makes me sick. This protein powder (both the chocolate AND the vanilla) is delicious. I’ve done it simply shaken with water in a pinch, and it was fine. At home, I blend it up with a frozen banana, a handful of frozen berries, and either water or homemade almond milk, and it’s excellent. The chocolate flavor tastes like Ovaltine, but in a good way. Someone complained that the vanilla flavor had an ‘artificial’ taste â what I detected was something that tasted very much like almond extract, which made my smoothie even more delectable. Moreover, the basic ingredients â pea protein, hemp seed protein, and cranberry seed protein â are pretty natural. I dig it. I’m so happy to have finally found this!

Vanilla Product is Good
Updated December 2012: I like the Vanilla version of this product. I stopped using it to save money and for the convenience of going to nearby stores if I exhausted my supply. Over the last two years, I have used Trader Joe’s hemp protein powder as well as Whole Foods’ hemp protein powder. I have decided to switch back to Biochem’s Vegan Protein Powder. I find the Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods hemp powders do not blend well resulting drinkable yet mediocre taste. I prefer the Biochem Vanilla taste profile and the thicker consistency post blending. In general, I make the same smoothie. For one serving, I add one serving of the powder, 1 cup of fresh or frozen fruit (generally blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, or mangoes), 1 ounce of pure not from concentrate cranberry juice, 1 teaspoon of oil (flax or hemp) or 2 tablespoons of ground chia, and sometimes an alcohol free liquid Stevia sweetener since I can’t find crushed Stevia leaves. The main ingredients: “highly digestable pea protein, organic hemp seed protein, antioxidant rich cranberry protein.” No animal derived material and no added sodium, which is naturally occurring in pea protein. “Pea protein contains the ideal amino acid profile for human consumption, while the Hemp protein provides dietary fiber for digestive support. Hemp is unique in that it offers not only fiber and protein but also the important essential fatty acids Omega-3 and Omega-6.” [BioChem] 1 serving (2 scoops) = 130 calories including 15 calories from fat; 20 grams of protein; 10 grams of carbs, 6 of which designated as sugar; and 1.5 grams of fat. Other ingredients: organic evaporated cane juice sugar, natural french vanilla flavor, xanthan gum, natural flavor, maltodextrin, and silica. Here’s my previous review from 2009: I have NOT tried the chocolate flavor but I have used the VANILLA flavor and I REALLY like it. I combine it with fresh fruit, pure not from concentrate cranberry juice, flaxseed oil, and sometimes stevia sweetener or agave nectar depending on the fruit base. It is excellent! I am very happy that I found this product and hope the VANILLA flavor becomes available soon [on Amazon].

Speaking for the chocolate flavor…
I’m purchasing my second canister of Biochem’s vegan chocolate protein shake. I originally bought it through a local market who was trying to move them, and I bought it for about what Amazon is charging, thinking it was a good price to try it (from the $25+ retail price at the store). At first I HATED it. I didn’t really listen to the instructions, and I tried to make a smoothie with crushed ice, and rice milk, etc. It tasted like peas! And I even added ice cream at one point, and then some chocolate syrup… still gross. Then, I got gestational diabetes, and I needed the protein, but I wasn’t allowed to have all the sugar. In an act of desperation, I made it according the recommended instructions, with very cold water. To be safe, I added a packet of stevia.WOW! It tasted good? The consistency was thick and I didn’t taste the peas. I realized a ratio that was comprised of a smaller amount of fluid to a larger amount of product actually worked to counteract the pea flavor, which I couldn’t taste at all. From there, I have tweaked it a little. I do add half chocolate rice milk, half cold water. If I want a more pudding-like consistency, I add only the rice milk, and it’s really thick and tastes the most like vegan pudding as I’ve ever tasted. Can’t speak for the vanilla flavor, but the chocolate is good if you don’t mess with the ratio. It was a dark couple of weeks when I couldn’t find the product in the stores. It’s great buying it online anyway, and cheaper.
