Retro universe in your hands
Extremely easy to assemble. I used a raspberry pi 4 2 GB model and itâs working amazing!!

Good, but expensive for what it is.
Iâve been playing around with this kit for about a week now and I love it, but I wouldnât recommend this for someone who is looking to get into handheld emulation. I happened to have a pi 3B+ that someone gifted me a few years back along with a $50 gift card and wanted to see what I could do with it. So with that, the set only cost me $30, but if you were to buy the pi and the batteries as well as this kit, it would probably be somewhere around $125 to complete the package. For that price, you could buy a pre-assembled handheld emulator with a build quality on par with a Nintendo Switch, so itâs difficult to recommend this unless you fall into the very niche category that I did (or if youâve got a kid you want to get involved in raspberry pies). It was a good beginnerâs project, if not a bit too easy. Itâs a pretty simple plug-and-play assembly that takes maybe 20 minutes. A bit too simple if you want to get involved in a project, but it would serve well as a first project for a child. As for quality, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything was well put together and it comes with a few replacement parts such as spare buttons. It also came with hdmi adapters for both a rpi 3 and 4 and a screwdriver, which is nice of them to include. Speaking of buttons, theyâre quite firm. Iâm starting to get used to them now (after maybe 5 hours of use), but hitting diagonals is difficult. As for software, there was nothing included in the box to give directions for assembly for software or the physical assembly, but everything is online and the instructions are nice and clear. Just look up GamePi43 and you should be able to find them pretty easily. Thereâs an image directing you for the physical assembly and a mostly clear set of instructions on how to get the right software installed. They serve their purpose, but they donât go into great detail on how or why youâre doing what youâre doing. I tried to throw in my sd card from a previous project and it didnât recognize the controller of the Pi43. It took me a while to figure it out, but thereâs a specific version of Retropie 4.4 (if I remember correctly) used for this build that has the drivers pre-installed. There are also instructions for installing the drivers yourself if you want to use a newer version if retropie, but theyâre not for the faint of heart. I wouldnât suggest trying it if youâre not confident in playing around in inner-workings of retropie. That being said, their version of retropie does come with something like 2,000 games for Neogeo, NES, and SNES (as well as literally 1 PSX game). One large problem with this kit isnât the kitâs fault, but itâs still a problem. One of the most important qualities of a handheld console is being able to whip it out for 5 minutes while youâre waiting at the bus stop, play for a few minutes, put the system to sleep and go about your day. This canât do that. When I turn on the console, it takes 2, maybe 3 minutes to get to the interface to select a game. And thereâs no sleep function. So this isnât great for gaming on the go so much as itâs a good little screen to play with while youâre on the couch watching tv. If I had a rp4, Iâm sure my load times would be better, but this would still be a problem.to;dr – Itâs great, but itâs just not worth the price unless you have the extra money/pi lying around and have a specific use case. You can get and amazing pre-made handheld with outstanding build quality for as cheap as $50 nowadays.5/5 for Ease of Assembly and Quality of Material, but 1/5 for Value because you can do better considering it doesnât even come with the pi for that price.

Some concerns
Seems like a great shell for a portable pi, but had some screws loose in the box. The d-pad looks like it’s cracking.Edit: I’ve finally tested it, and the face buttons seem useless.Infact, with that being said, the whole thing seems useless because you can get a cheaper case with a screen and battery pack. (Btw, this does not come with batteries.)Save your money and get something else.

Great item for price.
This little handheld is the best purchase yet. Works perfect with my Pi and batteries. Gives me plenty of charge time and keeps me busy while in lockdown. Wish there were some skins that can be added.

Great handheld with a fun build.
I love this handheld. It is a bit pricey but if you already have a raspberry pi it makes a fun project for the weekend.

Awkward to hold but otherwise is a great little kit
I had a spare Rpi 3 laying around so I picked up this little kit. I picked up a pair of 18650 calls from my local battery shop since this kit does not come with batteries. It’s easy to put together, and has most of the buttons you need to play up through 4th gen consoles and most handhelds up through GBA. It is rather cumbersome for me to hold though, and extended play is not comfortable unless I use an external USB or bluetooth controller.I highly recommend using the provided RetroPie image they have provided as it is the easiest way to get the screen and buttons working properly. It is outdated a bit, but with the restriction of limited buttons, the cores that are included should be more than adequate for an enjoyable experience.

Follow the instructions on the waveshare website & you will have this ready in no time.

This product did come with the mini HDMI adapter for my pi4 even though the description said it wouldn’t. It also has the full size HDMI if you have a pi3. The hardware is really nice. The pre configured emulator form waveshare works flawlessly
Jcalm –
Worked perfectly with Recalbox image. Too bad the unit doesn’t have a joystick.
