    Ravenwood has done a wonderful job of striking a balance between easy to access herbs and simple recipes, while still being effective.     As a life-log student of pharmacology, I sometimes have a healthy skepticism of herbal medicine, especially after reading scientific review articles about how some Chinese herbal medicines are laced with modern pharmaceuticals or are contaminated with heavy metals. This book, on the contrary, is a thoughtful introduction to the use of herbal medicines to enhance a healthy lifestyle, particularly for women. It does a great job of explaining the different methods of preparation and administration of infusions, tinctures, decoctions, and poultices, and the critical importance of finding a proper suppler and how to store various herbs. It also warns of the health risks of overuse and potential allergic reactions and to not assume that herbal medicines can always replace modern pharmaceutics. It explains the difference between herbs that are used as adaptogens and alteratives and stresses the importance of journaling to track how the herbs are aiding or hindering your health status. Much of the book provides a useful description of how herbal medicines can be used for improving health, particularly for women’s health, addressing issues like menstrual and reproductive health, fertility, menopause, and sexual health including libido. Other health issues addressed describe the beneficial effects of herbal medicines on thyroid, digestive and liver function, inflammation, skin care, insomnia, cognition, anxiety, stress, and depression, among others. This is a great resource about the use of herbal medicines for promoting health, particularly for women.

    This easy to read book is a useful introduction to herbalism if you are curious about trying herbs as natural remedies, but aren’t sure where to begin. It gives examples of herbs that can be used to treat common ailments, especially women’s ailments, and the different ways you can take them. Learn how to harvest herbs, make your own herbal teas, tinctures, and bath soaks, or even grow your own medicinal herb garden. Alternatively, you can nip to your local health food shop or order herbal remedies online, once you know what you need. That’s exactly what I did after reading this book and discovering bladderwrack might be helpful for me, so very much worth reading!
