You can brush, floss, be mindful of your diet and follow all the traditional oral hygiene advice, yet still find yourself needing fillings and ongoing dental cleanings. Dr. Ellie Phillips challenges this conventional dental instruction to “brush and floss,” arguing it can be both ineffective and potentially harmful. In her groundbreaking book, Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye, she unveils the secrets to achieving and maintaining a truly healthy mouth. In this book, Dr. Phillips explains the importance of bacterial balance for oral health, highlighting how it will never be attained through excessive flossing, aggressive cleanings, or the indiscriminate killing of mouth bacteria. She exposes the detrimental effects of certain dental procedures and products, including tooth whitening, bleaching, dental sealants, and certain fluorides. By adopting her practical do-it-yourself daily routine, you can effortlessly reduce plaque buildup, strengthen your teeth, heal and even reverse small cavities, cure periodontal disease, and eliminate tooth sensitivity.
The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 examines the underlying causes of cavities and gum disease―as well as how teeth and gums can naturally heal themselves. It provides a clear picture of why we must rethink our fundamental beliefs about oral care if we want to avoid dental problems and sidestep all the chronic health conditions that are so closely associated with poor oral health. Part 2 provides details of a complete program that has the power to stop, prevent, and even reverse dental problems.
Isn’t it time to bid farewell to cavities, gum disease, and the general health dangers from poor oral health? With Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye as your guide, you will be empowered to take rapid action and dramatically enhance the look, feel, and health of your teeth―at any stage of life, and with the confidence that it is never too late to begin.

Outstanding!
Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2025Do you have sensitive teeth or cavities?Do your gums bleed or hurt?Do you have gum pockets?Do you grind your teeth at night?Dr. Ellie Phillips is the author of Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye and Mouth Health Comes Clean. She has practiced dentistry for fifty years in England, Switzerland, and The United States, and has treated children as well as patients in nursing homes.Dr. Phillips states in her books that there are two causes for cavities and gum disease:1. Acidity2. Dry mouthWhen your saliva is acidic due to your diet, pregnancy, hormonal changes, medications, or stress, it creates an ideal environment for calcium and phosphates to leach out of your teeth to demineralize. This can also happen when you eat or drink foods that are acidic, such as coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, fruit juices, and so on.What helps to put calcium and phosphates back into your teeth to mineralize them is a mineral-rich saliva in a non-acidic environment. She argues that oral health is not so much about removing food particles from your teeth with brushing and flossing but more about your mouthâs environment.Through her many years of experience, using the latest research in oral health, she has developed a home care system that can reverse many types of dental and gum disease. Her “Complete Mouth Care System” uses common oral care products applied in a specific way to eliminate oral pathogens without harming the good bacteria. Her system eliminates gum pockets, make gums healthier with her special brushing technique, and remineralize teeth by increasing absorption of calcium and phosphates. She also provides advice on mineral-rich and alkalizing foods that support oral health. There is only one issue with her system that all health-conscious readers will face: some of the products she recommends, such as Crest toothpaste, have artificial colors, flavors, and other chemicals that we would not want to put in our mouths. And as a health-conscious dentist herself, she acknowledges that it is an issue. However, Dr. Phillips argues that if you have a serious dental or gum disease, these products with their specific formulation work effectively to help you avoid fillings and surgery. And she is absolutely correct. I have seen how quickly her system has helped me and those I know improve the health of our teeth and gums, including one who improved so much she avoided several fillings.Dr. Phillips is absolutely against fluoridation of drinking water but as the last step in her “Complete Mouth Care System,” she recommends a very dilute (0.05%) fluoride rinse. She argues that rinsing for a few seconds with this dilute fluoride rinse creates a charge on the protein biofilm–speeding absorption of minerals from salvia into the tooth–to the point where the enamel is fully mineralized for faster healing of dental caries and cavities.I used her system several months ago, especially during the pandemic mix. It got rid of a really bad toothache. After a couple of really good dental checkups, I mainly rely on Zellieâs xylitol mints after each meal and snack formulated by Dr. Phillips and brush 2 minute using Crest anti-cavity toothpaste. Her many videos on social media is invaluable. Thank you, Dr. Phillips.

This is a very important book to have if you care about your teeth and your children’s health!
Even though I read the first edition of this book years ago I still found this 2nd. edition to be interesting and very valuable. Amazing Dr.Ellie has continued her important work and presents so much helpful information in this new edition. I wish every dentist and every dental school had this book on their shelves! This book can save your teeth and is a “must read”.

Good review
I’m glad I purchased this second edition — it contains some new info and is written in an up-to-date, interesting way. As I read, I can hear Dr Ellie’s voice, thanks to her incredible series of complementary YT videos. This book has an encouraging tone, never critical. It makes you believe you can take charge of your oral health and actually succeed. I did expect to find more science, like clear explanations of the interactions between the recommended products, more about pH levels and mouth chemistry, data on the oral microbiome and various bacteria, info on specific ingredients in the mouth care system, alternative products, etc. I also take off a star for a really incomplete index.

The best my teeth have ever been! A new mouth! No more receding gums, no sensitive teeth!
My husband and I have been following this protocol for a year. Within a few months, my teeth were no longer sensitive, my gums had regrown instead of receding, and little pits in my teeth had started to fill. My enamel is so thick that food rinses off easily, and it almost feels like I’ve got a thick shiny coating (the enamel) on my teeth. My husband’s deep pockets are nearly gone. Everyday my teeth feel cleaner than they would after going to a dental hygienist. I don’t expect I’ll ever need to see a dentist again. This is the best my mouth has ever felt! And, no more flossing!!!

Excellent Dental Self Care Manual!
Excellent source of great dental care information! I’ve long thought that it didn’t make sense that, according to healthcare systems, the mouth was the only part of the body that couldn’t heal itself. Dr Phillips provides a readable, well documented alternative to traditional slash and burn methodology. It’s only been 3 months since I started following [more or less] her wisdom and my mouth is noticeably cleaner, stronger, whiter teeth. A Must read for individuals and parents alike.

System worked to an extent but neglects nutrition
I tried the system for several months, and while it certainly did improve my dental health, and I appreciate her efforts to help people improve their dental health at home, it didn’t completely solve the problems I was having such as bleeding gums, and I found the constant intake of xylitol to be unsustainable, and did not like the reliance on chemical products & flouride. It wasn’t until I started following the diet from the books Cure Gum Disease & Cure Tooth Decay by Ramiel Nagel that I saw a drastic improvement in by dental health. Dr. Ellie doesn’t include nutrition in her system which I think is a major flaw, as its been known since the 1930’s that diet & nutrition play a major role in dental health, as evidenced by the work of Dr. Weston Price.
