Fixes All The Issues/Headaches From the Original Model
I have five cats, so we go through a lot of litter. I am always looking for new ways to streamline my routine. So one of those ways was getting the original scoop free litter boxes. In order to extend the life of my litter, I got the reusable pans, and physically scooped their “leavings” out of the compartment twice a day. I also lined the litter boxes with baking soda for extra odor control and use a combination of Arm and Hammer litter box deodorizers and fresh step crystals to fight the feces smell for those little tiny bits that the grate sometimes leaves behind that are impossible to scoop out. My biggest complaint was that even though I had six original scoop free litter boxes for five cats (expensive, I know), that the “poop containers” would fill up so quickly and stink up the house, even when I was emptying them consistently once or twice a day. Also, the grate itself would get filthy, and there was no way to remove it to properly clean it. The box was also very low to the ground and didn’t have much depth, so the litter scatter was everywhere all the time and forced me to have to change it more often because all the litter was soiled with urine, and because the depth was so thin, it made it super noticeable to both me and my cats that it was time to change the litter.
It seems that Petsafe was basically reading my mind with this new model they put out for the clumping litter box. I still opted to use crystals for it because I prefer them over clay which leaves dust all over the house, but I love the option to use clay if I want to. This new box is larger than the previous box, and deeper. The sides are a bit taller, so I would recommend a step of some kind for smaller kittens to get into, but because its taller, I do notice far less scatter than I had with the previous model. Instead of scooping the poop to the other end of the litter box, it actually scoops it into a drawer to make it more accessible to dump more often without having to open the entire box to get to it. The “poop storage” drawer is actually much bigger, so it can actually go longer without dumping, but I still choose to dump it daily. And finally my favorite part, the grates COME OUT! Those filthy grates that were the bane of my existence in the previous model finally come out, and guess what, they are dishwasher safe! I recommend cleaning your dishwasher with dishwasher cleaner after you try this hack, but every couple of days, I take all the grates, put them in the dishwasher, set it and forget it for about an hour. Then just reinstall them, and press the button to grab all the leavings that your cats did while they were in the cycle. They are clean, sanitized, and no longer need to be scrubbed maliciously with a scrub brush. My life could not be more streamlined and happy with this new model.
My ONLY grievance with this is the pan and the drawer are not considered dishwasher safe (I asked Petsafe), and that they did away with the LED counter they had on the previous model so I can keep track of which litter boxes they are using the most easily. Hope they add these features into future models. I have sent the company my feedback on it. But honestly, I just take the pans and the drawers to the shower, spray them down with Lysol and shower them off with hot water. Takes about five minutes, and most of that time is just drying them off and preparing the litter back in the pan.
In all honestly I find these litter boxes way easier to clean and maintain. I am extremely happy with them. My cats also seem to enjoy having a deeper litter box to do their business in. I am extremely happy with my purchase. I originally purchased two to replace the two kitchen ones just to test, but ended up buying four more to replace the others after just a couple of days of using the new ones. Yes, pricey expense, but the investment was totally worth it to me. The time saving element alone was worth it. I am single, live alone, work full time, and have five cats. Anything I can do to get a little extra time back is a blessing.
Also, with these new boxes, I have been able to extend the life of my litter significantly. I have gone to changing the litter once every two weeks instead of once a week, which saves a tremendous amount of money for me personally on my cat budget. I went from spending over $800/mo on crystal litter to spending about $200. Keep in mind I am an absolute clean freak, so as soon as I walk by the box and catch a whiff, I am changing the box that day. Some people get nose blind but I am super sensitive to it and literally cannot wait once I smell start to smell it.
Anyone who is a clean freak like me, I highly recommend this box to streamline your routine. I feel like each box will be good for up to two cats. But I have always used the rule of one box for each cat plus one. I also still have two standard boxes on top of that just to give them options, but they generally don’t use them as much as they use the scoop free ones.
I also used Klarna through their app if that helps anyone else budget wise.
Anyway, hope you liked my review.

Too much money for not enough quality
Honestly, the one without the bag/waste compartment runs smoother than this one. This thing is janky. The rake frequently gets stuck on the waste compartment and it smears wet litter into the edges and sides so I have to frequently clean it anyway. The waste compartment doesn’t really have much of a filter to keep in smell like the nicer quality self cleaning litter boxes I’ve used before. It’s rather pricey, too. I wanted to return it and invest the money into something else. I wasn’t expecting to be so unsatisfied with it and broke down/recycled the box it came in since the box was huge. I wound up requesting a refund after about 3 weeks of struggling with it, except it took me a week to find a box this large, clunky thing could fit in to return it and in that week, my return qr code expired. Such a waste all around. UPDATE: literally the day after I wrote this, it broke. Now the rake will not do a full sweep and return. It sweeps into the waste box and gets stuck on nothing. The box blinks blue, the rake occasionally gives a twitch, and the box loudly beeps at me. I have to manually push the rake back to the start position, but the next time it rakes, it again gets stuck in the waste box. I spent $250 to basically have a small manual cleaning litter box that I clean myself, but requires MORE babysitting than the same size $10 manual scoop box I can get at any store with a pet section. Video is just to show that the rake is indeed stuck and not just slow.

Not perfect, but best option currently available
I had two Littermaids and one stopped working. Lo and behold, they are discontinued, so I had to search elsewhere for a replacement. One of our kitties does not like covered boxes, and this was the only uncovered replacement I could find. It costed about $100 more than the Littermaid which hurt my soul a little, but they are actually larger inside than the Littermaid and have a reusable/washable tray, which I think is a bit of an improvement. The complaints you’ll see in these reviews about wasted litter are valid. You’ll want to be sure not to fill it over half way and flatten it back out if you have a kitty who will kick all the litter to one side. The lift at the end to get to the tray likely just needs to be a bit taller and steeper to fix this issue. The tracks are also above the rakes and covered, so I have not had the issue of litter getting caught in them like with the Littermaid. One final point is that it runs notably slower than the Littermaid, but also quieter, so it kinda evens out the pros-cons ratio. Overall a good replacement so far, but I imagine later versions will likely be a true overall improvement.

Built well and works!
I am going to be in the minority here and give this a very positive review. I went down the LR4 path initially, but they are maintenance nightmares. I initially had two, gave one away that stopped working to someone that likes to tinker and fix things. The complaint that this is loud is true, for me it’s actually music to my ears! I have a total of 4 automatic litter boxes, 1LR4, three Pet safe automatic litter boxes, this one and two that rake the litter underneath a covered area at one end of the box. The rake speed is slower than the other two, and I could clean it faster manually…..BUT I don’t care how long it takes as long as I don’t have to clean it. I use crystal litter (my preference) and occasionally the litter needs stirred to redistribute the crystals evenly. Once the rake mechanism stopped working but I just gave it a cleaning with attention to the grooves the rake fits into and it was fine. The removable receptacle works great, I don’t use any bags just empty, wipe down and replace. It’s taken a long time for my cats to get use to the LR4, but with these Petsafe automatic litter boxes they adapted to them easily (probably because they um look like a regular litter box). I think this is built well, it is rather low tech (it doesn’t have a counter to let you know how often it’s being used or an app).
