With more than half a million copies sold, the first edition of Practical Paleo revolutionized the way we think about food and our bodies. Dubbed “The Paleo Bible” by readers, it explained how simply eating real, whole foods and avoiding processed, refined foods can improve our health—including reducing or even eliminating symptoms associated with common health disorders. Now, this second edition has been updated to include new information, answer common questions, and make it even easier for you to customize your diet to meet your personal health goals. What’s new?
TWO ENTIRELY NEW CHAPTERS
• “Getting Started with Paleo” shows you step by step how to switch to the Paleo way of eating, whether you want to go all-in all at once or transition gradually over time. This chapter also includes a a more comprehensive explanation of the 4R Protocol, which walks you through removing harmful foods, repairing the gut, reinoculating with beneficial bacterial, and reintroducing foods that were previously eliminated.
• “Living the Paleo Lifestyle” offers tips and suggestions for navigating holidays and parties, talking to friends and family about Paleo, getting your kids involved in the kitchen, and much more.
3 NEW 30-DAY MEAL PLANS
• The new meal plans provide guidance for addressing common health concerns: Adrenal Health (stress management), Healthy Hormones (for both women and men), and Liver Detox Support.
• There’s also a new detailed guide to finding the meal plan that’s right for you, so you can get the health benefits you need with the fewest restrictions.
40+ NEW RECIPES!
• These brand-new, mouthwatering recipes range from breakfast foods to family-friendly weeknight meals—many of which are one-pot or meal-in-one and use budget-friendly proteins.
• Recipes from the last edition have been updated based upon reader feedback over the years
• There’s also a new guide to special ingredients and where to find them
Additions throughout the book explore new topics, such as when eating low-carb can actually be a problem, how stress affects the adrenal system, and why the government changed its mind about dietary cholesterol. The organization has been extensively revised to make the valuable information on food and how it affects the body more user-friendly—and easier to apply to your own health needs. Practical Paleo has proven to be the resource people reach for again and again for information on healthy living, delicious recipes, and guidance on changing your diet to improve your health.

The only Paleo book you’ll ever need!
My man and I are strictly Paleo and have read the best of the best in terms of books – everything from Robb Wolf to Gary Taubes, Mark Sisson to Dr. Cate Shanahan – and I can tell you for sure that this is the only book you’ll need.I found Diane when I was having severe digestive troubles earlier in the year. My stomach cramped up and I experienced awful reflux every time I ate. Sometimes when it would really flare up, I’d have to fast for an entire weekend to feel better. I was regularly constipated for up to TWO WEEKS at time (as in, no bowel movements for 14 days – awful)! I saw a holistic doctor but licorice root, marshmallow root, natural laxatives and magnesium did nothing to solve my problems. Four hundred bucks on holistic supplements later, I found Diane’s podcast. Through listening to her podcasts with her enthusiastic teammate Liz Wolfe, I started adding kombucha and sauerkraut to my diet, cutting out nuts and never, ever eating gluten. It took time for me to find what my exact triggers were, but now I know that I have an over-exposure allergy to eggs and that raw nuts can mess me up for days. I can tolerate gluten once in a while but after seeing how flat my tummy got when I avoided it, I don’t indulge anymore.I listen to their podcasts every week and wasn’t sure if I needed this book since I already own so many Paleo books. Boy, was I wrong – if only this book had come out first, I wouldn’t have needed any of the other ones! The section on poop alone is life-changing!What really stands out here are the customized meal plans for the specific issues you might be facing. I found myself wanting to copy each of them and hand them out to family and friends. The tear-out guides, as other reviewers have mentioned, are also fantastic. The recipes are so incredible – my man and I made the artichoke lemon chicken last night, as well as the chocolate coconut cookies. I also spent my time elbow-deep in cabbage and carrots to make the sauerkraut.Diane is so knowledgeable and delivers the information in easy-to-understand action steps. This book is perfect for beginners and even great for the seasoned Paleo eater. The photographs are lovely and the recipes are easy to follow. A truly beautiful book well worth the list price and more. If I hadn’t found Diane and Liz, I would have definitely seen a GI specialist by now and wiped out whatever good gut flora I had left with antibiotics. That being said, there is so much more covered here than you can get in a forty-minute podcast. Well worth the money spent.I bought the book in paperback to have and to hold – Kindle lovers may want to pick up the Kindle version for portability reasons – this is a heavy book and it could be useful to have recipes at your fingertips. That being said, I just took a picture of the recipes I wanted to make on my phone and took that with me. The quality of the physical book is very high and will not disappoint. Before going to the physician, go practical! Practical Paleo, that is. 🙂

THIS is my FAVORITE cookbook (and not just favorite Paleo cookbook!)As a runner, fitness obsessed, body-hacking, fulltime working mom, and dedicated wife, I committed our whole family to this way of life and my kids got healthier, my husband and I were healthier and my autoimmune symptoms improved (Celiac, Hashimoto’s, Raynaud’s.)That said, cooking became a boring rotation of foods. It was always just plain old meat and veggies with boring variants. I said goodbye to my slow-cooker, the idea of ever eating a GOOD muffin, and the idea of eating anything other than eggs, salad and the aforementioned plain Jane dinner. The only thing good I had was my 85% dark chocolate, a little wine and BACON (meat candy.)I had also picked up a variety of Primal/Paleo cookbooks that were, at best, valiant attempts at grain-free, legume-free meals. I was still bored. I’m sorry, but I was. When I saw the pre-order on Amazon for Diane’s booked, I immediately ordered it. I am ALWAYS looking for something different. When it arrived, I was wowed by the pictures, the explanations, and highly intrigued by the 30 day meal plans for weight loss, for Autoimmune disease, for thyroid, for brain-health, etc. I read it cover to cover quite a few times before I made a single attempt at any of the menus. Then, one Sunday morning, overcome by my inner desire to eat one good Paleo muffin, I set my sights on her Blueberry muffin recipe. I made the most light, delicious, blueberry muffins (made with COCONUT flour, blueberries and a balanced level of freshness from lemon zest.) Everyone was wowed. Everyone. And the recipe was simple, to the point and we all made it to church in time! Quick, straightforward, time saving recipes? And delicious??? Was this a fluke? When I went to the office on Monday, my work-from-home hubby set mind to task and went on a cooking, baking, meal-planning frenzy. Simply amazing. For me, he omitted all nightshades and made – Shut-the-Front-Door good Shrimp Pesto with FETTUCCINE (made out of zucchini – a recipe I was afraid to try because vegetables for pasta made me apprehensive.) For the kids he made an incredible bolognese. Where does she come up with this stuff? It continued – balsamic slow cooker ribs, salmon cakes, braised beef shanks, pumpkin pancakes, and our own variation of the lamb lettuce boats (we make nightshade free kabobs) and the most incredible – Avo-ziki sauce. I mean, seriously delicious. To be honest, there are so many good recipes that we haven’t found one yet we don’t like. The kids love it, we love it and we’re all looking forward to Paleo Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter meals for a change instead of longing for grain filled meals of days long past. Her meals cover all seasons.I don’t always write reviews, but when I do it’s because something has improved my life so dramatically, I overcome my inertia and spend time on it.If you’ve read this entire review and don’t feel it’s worth taking a shot on, I will be shocked. Friends, family members, and co-workers had received it as a gift from us to them and they’re always shockingly surprised by how delicious it is.Now, I’m Diane’s stalker; waiting patiently for more recipes from BalancedBites.com. I’ve read she reads every review. My only regret is Amazon did not have a signed copy. Thank you, Diane. THANK YOU!
Diane blew me away with this cookbook. I was not always Paleo, but was introduced to the Paleo lifestyle when I came across a small article featuring an interview with Dr. Loren Cordain in “Runners World.” Could it be? A diet where a glass of wine won’t kill you but the grains, legumes and oils will?

In my opinion there is no better book on this topic. All the basics and details are discussed in this book. If you are looking ONE paleo book you MUST buy THIS one. Everything in this book makes sense and fits to the things I have figured out myself. Diane Sanfilippo made her homeworks. Thank you for this clever book!!

This was one of my first Paleo books and still one of the best, in my opinion. I have used her recipes more than any other Paleo cookbook I own. I appreciate that her baked goods used coconut flour vs nut flour as we have nut allergies in our family. The Gingerbread muffins are out of this world–the book is worth it to get that recipe alone. They are delicious and moist and do not taste like a gluten free muffin. One small issue is the index– she tries to be helpful by having an ingredient index and then an index for topics in the book, but some major areas are missing from the ingredient index. When I want to make a chicken recipe, I usually flip to the index and look up “Chicken”. And while there are a lot of great chicken recipes, they aren’t indexed that way (at and a few other ingredients, like salmon and fish in general). That said, the recipe section is organized very well, and the edges of the pages have the categories color coded, so a quick flip brings me to the Poultry section. She provides a variety of homemade seasoning blends which are tasty and affordable. I enjoy the recipes in is book a lot because they seem to appeal to a mass audience. These are recipes I can make for my family and my children will eat them. (Side note–Another great Paleo cookbook is Well Fed, but the hard part for me with that one is the dishes are heavily spiced–most of them are too strong/too hot/too much for small children. A nice resource to experience new favors, but not ideal for young children. )One of the most beneficial elements of this book are the 30 day meal plans–there are a wide variety, for instance for digestive health, or for auto-immune conditions. This is an incredibly valuable resource. The photos in this book are wonderful and there are a ton of them. The sheer amount of information in this book makeit a must-have addition to your Paleo library. If you are new to Paleo, this is an excellent, user friendly guide to the hows and the whys in a very readable format (lots of information, but not dull or overly textual). It will provide you with all the information, and then give you ways (thru the recipes and meal plans) to execute it.Highly recommended.

**Come notato, questo libro e’ scritto in inglese. Anche le misure sono “imperial” (americane). Se qualcuno ha una domanda riguardante le ricette o le misure, chiedetemi! :)**This book is, hands down, the best paleo book I’ve bought to-date (and I’ve bought an impressive stack)! If you’re looking for a “first” paleo cookbook, this is the one as it has menus, spice blends, pantry lists, and other information I found to be very helpful when first starting out with the paleo diet in addition to many wonderful recipes. For me, it was just the right explanation of how to make paleo work for me and I’ve recommended it to friends and family since. Great book!
