Allspice

Gardening tips: Allspice grows in tropical climates and is widely cultivated in Jamaica.

Properties: anesthetic, antibacterial, antioxidant, antispasmodic, antiviral

Uses: It is time to expand the horizons of allspice use beyond the ingredient lists for pumpkin pie and mulled cider. Found in almost every cupboard, this warming and pungent spice is a vitamin supplement and medicine chest packed into a small berry. Allspice is high in vitamins and minerals including calcium, iron, and manganese. Allspice fights off colds and flu, calms menstrual cramps, settles upset stomachs, and enhances the delivery of nutrients in the body.

Astragalus

Gardening tips: Astragalus requires well-drained, sandy soil and lots of sun. It is a hardy plant that withstands frost and can survive with little water.

Properties: antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral

Uses: Astragalus has a very pleasant taste that blends well into soups and grain dishes. Astragalus root that can be purchased in the store is precut into long, thin wedges that look like tongue depressors. Just throw two or three of these flattened sticks into any soup that you make. Add them at the beginning of the soup preparation and leave the sticks in the pot until the soup is finished.

Calendula

Gardening tips: The more you pick calendula flowers, the more they grow. Calendula will grow in full sun but also does well with some shade. It survives with little watering.

Properties: anti-inflammatory, antiviral, bitter tonic, demulcent, emollient

Uses: Sprinkle the fresh flowers onto just about anything you eat, such as salads, sandwiches, and tacos. Add dried calendula flowers to soup and broths. Drink the golden petals in tea, include them in your cordials, and add them to smoothies. The beautiful sunshine-colored petals of the calendula flower are a first-rate skin healer.

    My favorite new herbal book!!
I really enjoyed this book! I am slowly rebuilding my herbal library since Hurricane Florence, and this was a great new addition. It begins with an Herbal Kitchen Materia Medica which is enjoyable to read and informational. It really opens your eyes to the possibilities that lie within your reach without requiring hard to find herbs/spices, although I do have a few things I will order from Mountain Rose Herbs like hawthorn and juniper berries. It includes recipes for honeys, vinegars, smoothies, cordials, oils, and more. I have already made the rosemary hair rinse, rose honey (smells AMAZING), summer solstice cordial, indulgence oil, vanilla spice cordial, cramp cordial, peppermint rice vinegar, and mineral tonic vinegar. I plan to make many of the herbal drinks to keep us cool, healthy, and hydrated this summer instead of plain ice tea and lemonade for the kids like usual. Along with the book you get a free digital gift of The Tumeric Sessions, and there is an corresponding online video tutorial course for the book. I would like to note I wasn’t clear on some directions for the summer solstice cordial, but I emailed the author and she responded right away and was happy to answer my questions. (My herbs and fruit would not stay submerged in the port wine, but she said that sometimes happens. Also, she said to let the wines infuse for only a couple of weeks instead of the month as noted in the instructions for herbal cordials with alcohol such as brandy, and to refrigerate it after decanting.) We can’t wait to try it though on the solstice, it looks beautiful already! Definitely check out this book with its large amount of recipes and inspiration! This book left me feel inspired and creative in the kitchen!

Great book to keep in your kitchen
This book isn’t a cookbook with full meal recipes in it. Instead it’s a book that shows you simple and many times quick ways to use herbs every day. There’s a section that tells you about each herb and it’s properties and uses, and then goes into making herbal waters and drinks, smoothies, herbal honey, herbal vinegar, cordials, oils, herbal ghee, pesto, sprinkles and salts, and bath and foot soaks. Chapter 13 is kitchen meals, broken down by season, and there are four recipes for each season. If you’re looking for a way to add more herbs into your life or even just more flavor into your cooking, then I recommend checking this book out. The recipes are easy to make and a delight to use.

Excellent book…easy to read and follow…
Awesome book!!! The recipes are easy to understand. I am a Type 2 Diabetic and thanks to some of the herbs that I have already been taking for the past 5 months my A1C has gone down from 8.3 to 7.2 and I feel much better. It is nice to have so many recipes that are good for your health and they are right under your nose in the kitchen! I love to cook and love using herbs and spices and now I have so many more recipes thanks to Kami’ book “The Herbal Kitchen”. This book is an easy read and easy recipes to follow. Best herb book on the market so far….unless Kami writes a new book:). Thank you Kami for all your helpful and knowledgeable information on “mother earth’s” gifts to us:)

Excellent book on home cooking with herbs for preventative and medicinal health benefits
My headline says it all, basically. I’ve been watching Kami for a while and what I like about her and why I bought her book is, her methods incorporate a lot of herbs into your everyday cooking. They’re for all different reasons too. She comes from mothers and grandmothers who’ve used them for a long time. She’s learned the benefits of digestive aides, herbs that prevent colds and flus, herbs that have incredible health benefits that should be eaten everyday in our food, as food, not just medicinal tinctures or salves. She also has an excellent description of each herbal plant that she covers in the beginning of the book. Her personality is user friendly, especially on her videos and she has a true passion for sharing the gift of herbal foods that have long been forgotten thru the use of processing and packaged food in stores.

    Wow, who knew!
I really enjoy using this book. There are so many recipes to chose from, such a great variety. I haven’t tried all of them yet but I do have some favorites in the seasoning section that I make over and over. I would suggest more recommendations on how to use the various preparations. Just a little jump start before our own imaginations kick in. Kami McBride is a great teacher and I recommend people watch her videos and YouTube presentations.

Must have source for creative herbal recipes
This book not only educates you about herbs and how to use them, but gives you wonderful recipes. I was so impressed I immediately ordered one for my daughter in-law. The focus is on using herbs, and while you can grow your own the recipes use simple to obtain dried herbs so you can plunge right in! The recipes are creative, easy, inspiring, and often totally unique. Great gift ideas! How to become the perfect all natural hostess!

Not what I expected. Much better!!
I was not sure what to expect. But I love the way the book is put together. I have used several recipes already and they were awesome. One was a coffee sub which I needed. It was good. Did not taste like coffee, (nothing does) but it was close enough and gave me real energy for the day. Not the crashy kind. I plan to make some of the summer drinks for my family soon. I am also looking forward to trying the herbal mixes for cooking. I am glad I bought the book. It will be a go to book for me! Loved the Materia Medica in the front of the book. Very helpful.
