Are you still reaching for that pill for every little ache and pain? You might regret it.
People are becoming overly dependent on medication, which is not very good for our bodies… and our pockets.
According to the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, most adults in the US & UK take over-the-counter medication as a first response to minor health conditions.
People automatically take pills for a headache, a sniffle, or a pulled muscle without a second thought.
But opting for this quick fix, especially when done regularly, can seriously affect our health, even leading to addiction and death in extreme cases.
Plus, it’s a massive drain on your bank account.
You might be spending your hard-earned money on something you could be getting for much cheaper or even for free.
Herbal medicine has been used to treat different illnesses for centuries, and most of the developing world still relies on them for their health needs.
Using plants as medicine is nothing new – even big pharma uses plants as active ingredients for some of its most popular drugs.
If you’re looking for a safer, more affordable, and more holistic alternative to pharmaceutical drugs, herbs are the answer.

For Basic Beginners
The beginning of the book was mostly opinions about herbal medicine vs. western medicine. There was also information about the history of herbal and alternative medicine like acupuncture. Later the author talks about how to acquire plants and some simple uses. Unfortunately, most of the plants covered are really basic, rosehips, mint, ginger, elderberries, clove, etc. There were some nice recipes for things like teas, syrups and facemasks.Overall it was mostly an opinion piece that came off a little preachy with some helpful basic tips and instructions. Personally, I would like to have seen less opinion, as most people picking up this kind of book would already have their own about western medicine, and more recipes, a better grouping of plants, their uses, side effects, and pictures. There were no pictures for plant identification or preparation. However, if you are looking for a very basic beginners guide and you are on the fence or haven’t formed your own opinion about using herbs and natural remedies, this is a nice book.

Excellent Basic Information
As the former director of a functional medicine practice, I’m always a little leery of books on herbal medicine. So often they go off the deep end, touting CURES and how herbs are the end-all-be-all of health and wellness. I was so happy to see that this book saw large role for herbs within a framework that allowed for pharmaceuticals, nutrition, exercise, and other aspects of wellness. This levelheaded perspective is maintained throughout the book and allows the author’s expertise to shine. They walk the reader through the basics, teaching everything from finding the herbs to preparing to when to use. True, those who are familiar with the basics and looking for advanced techniques may want a different book, but for beginners who know nothing about herbs, this is the place! I would have no problem handing this book to a client to help them learn more about herbalism and its potential place in their lives.
