This thing is Awesome!! Instant relief from dry air, Just Buy It
If you made it this far just buy it. Probably the least expensive humidifier/vaporizer on Amazon and it works the best. I should have known, Vicks has been around a long time.I went through the cool mist humidifiers with fancy remotes, phone apps, ALL were useless, they could not even raise the humidity in a small bedroom. This is as simple and functional as it gets. I filled the tank with tap water, a pinch of salt and plugged it in, within 15 seconds it was putting out a soothing warm mist. Took my living room from 32% humidity to 58% in about 20 minutes. After a few hours my skin is not as dry and nose and throat are not dry anymore.Personally, I love the simplicity just fill the tank and plug it in. There are NO timers, settings, fancy lighting, remote controls, buttons or phone apps. I mean seriously, does a vaporizer need a friggn phone app. lolWorth every penny can not believe you can get this thing shipped to your door in one day for under 20 dollars.EDIT: By the way, the black flakes in the tank some people are complaining of are there as a feature. It is actually the minerals from the water you add. The heater boils them and deposits them into the tank so they do not blow into the air with the mist. This prevents white dust or mineral deposits like many of the cool mist humidifiers cause. Great feature

    Great product
Bought this as a resale and couldn’t be happier! This is great for money and value. I looked for this brand because I had one of these models when I was a kid and remember my grandma always used this specific brand stating they last. The steam comes out forcefully and strong so far but the unit seems to get very hot to the touch so be careful if you have young or older people. It has been easy to watch, clean and fill. The design is great for all of that and to keep it from leaking. You should only have to fill once a day if you’re using a smaller space like a bedroom or dorm.. I would recommend using this it functions better than most of the other ones I have seen.

An Explanation of Humidifier Operating Principles
I absolutely love this thing.Ultrasonic humidifiers require distilled water, lest the droplets evaporate and leave a fine powder of mineral precipitate all over your house and in your lungs. Evaporative humidifiers require new wicks (improperly referred to an filters). And both are susceptible to mold and bacteria growth. Not this thing. It boils the water, and boiled water is pure and clean. It’s how distilled water is manufactured. The heat in the tank kills the bacteria, but the water itself is not at boiling temperature. It’s thanks to how the electrodes work. Only the water inside the plastic boiler unit reaches boiling point. Some people find that their vaporizer stops working after a short time. This is caused by white limescale building up on the electrodes, blocking the current. Still better than an ultrasonic humidifier, which would just fling all that limescale into the air. You can descale the unit with vinegar, which takes maybe 15 minutes. But where I live, the water doesn’t have limescale. Nonetheless, I’ve noticed a decrease in output over 2 years of usage, which could be caused by the electrode eroding away. This is what causes the black flakes when you replace the water.Regardless, this thing is $18. Just add lots of salt to get the output up, and if that doesn’t work, buy a new one. You’ll still save money. The manual says not to add more than 1/2tsp of salt, but I add a tablespoon and it floods the house with humidity. It’s mesmerizing to watch. The worst thing about this humidifier is that the output decreases as the water level decreases. For that, I know another reviewer mentioned floating the boiler unit in a five gallon bucket. I need to go find that review.

The classic, simple, just-works hot steam humidifier like you had as a kid.
I love these old Vick’s humidifiers. They are crazy simple and they just work – no fancy knobs, buttons, readouts or anything. I wanted a humidifier in our bedroom this winter for a stretch of very cold and dry weather and it fit the bill without costing a lot of money. As stated in some other reviews, my water required a little added table salt to get the steam going but only the first night – subsequent fill-ups did not require any salt. Also – we don’t have mineral heavy water here so I did not get any of the spotting or mineral dust that some others complained about after using the unit. The only detractors for me (and what cost a star) are that 1) there is no on/off switch – you power it off and on by plugging and unplugging it. This is somewhat annoying but also put undue wear on the receptacle connectors. 2) the top could be easier to grip and lift out for refilling.. several times it slipped out of my grip while trying to align the little locking tabs in order to get the top out of the lower tub. Then, once you do have the top off, you have to watch the dripping from the wet unit. It’s not hard to pull it out and hold it over the hole while refilling with a pitcher but it takes some patience and coordination (not something you want to deal with if you’re sick).Otherwise, I’ve never had a humidifier that was 100% convenient to fill so it’s par for the course.I’ll definitely buy another one of these things when I need one.

Its…ok. for 17$. A lot to be desired. Dirty……pics att.
It’s not super expensive. My only gripe is that it was the impression that it is an evaporative humidifier. This one gets really dirty fast, like algae is in the water everything I clean it. Kinda gross. Something this dirty I would expect of an ultrasonic humidifier, which I was trying to avoid. It also only has one speed, which seems to be dependant on the ammount of water in the reservoir. That kinda sucks. It also doesn’t completely empty, it’ll go till an inch and then stops or is so little it’s un noticeable.
