Using a mobile phone for serious video work is nothing new – we have seen a steady increase in the use of phones among filmmakers in recent years. I think the introduction of the iPhone 15 Pro with Apple Log and USB-C SSD video recording further boosted the trend. There is now a wide variety of accessories and rigs for phones to choose from.
The Chinese camera accessories manufacturer SmallRig offers many products for phones, too. And recently, they launched something new – a wireless monitor specifically for phones. Let’s take a quick look at its features.
SmallRig wireless video monitor for phones
The wireless video monitor for phones from SmallRig (SKU product number 4850) is a new device that offers a way to monitor the image when using an Apple or Android phone. The monitor works via a wireless screen sharing function, and SmallRig claims the maximum range is 10m (32.8ft).

The monitor’s chassis is made from aluminum alloy and plastic, and it’s compact and lightweight at around 129g (4.5 oz), measuring 106 × 69 × 14 mm (4.2 × 2.7 × 0.5 in.). It features one 1/4″-20 mounting thread on the longer bottom side, with all the buttons on one of the short sides.

There is a power button (double-tap mirrors the image), as well as two buttons for decreasing/increasing the screen brightness (there are three levels of dimming). Last but not least, there is a USB-C port for charging.

To attach this to the back of the phone more easily, the monitor has a built-in MagSafe-compatible magnet on the back side. The built-in 1500mAh battery should provide up to three hours (two hours at full brightness) of operation according to SmallRig.
The included wireless smart remote control works for mirror mode, zoom, or capture functions.
Possible use cases
I see a few different scenarios where a device like this would be very handy. While it’s commonly used for low-angle shots with the monitor angled upward on a top handle, it’s just as handy when filming over a crowd, arm outstretched, phone in hand.

Additionally, the monitor can help improve video quality when vlogging. Instead of relying on the front-facing camera, you can snap the monitor to the back of the phone with MagSafe and use the higher-quality main camera.

Price and availability
The SmallRig wireless video monitor is available now. Please note that the manufacturer claims it can only be purchased in the US, UK, and some EU countries. The monitor retails for $64.99, and it comes with a cold-shoe pan/tilt head and a wireless remote included in the package.
