Microsoft’s Windows 11 moved the volume and brightness indicators to the bottom of the screen and centralized it for the first time. Now, the company is working on a way to let you change where it appears, and you can even move it back to where it was in Windows 10.
As introduced in the latest Dev Channel version of Windows 11, spotted by The Verge, both brightness and volume levels as well as airplane mode and virtual desktops can be moved to either the top of the display in the center, or to the top left.
Microsoft says this was a “highly requested” change. You won’t be able to pick anywhere else to move these indicators to meaning there’s no option for the top right or either of the bottom corners. That appears to be to avoid interfering with other Windows buttons such as the minimize and close options in the top right.
This feature is currently limited to the company’s latest beta, but when it does arrive you’ll be able to change this setting by heading to Settings > System > Notifications. Here you’ll find a dropdown called Position of the onscreen pop-up.

Alongside this change, Microsoft is introducing a new Recall feature with a personalized homepage to help you “find and reconnect with the apps and websites that matter to you.”
The new homepage will only work when you’ve got the company’s snapshot collection feature turned on. If you’ve done so, it’ll learn what you’ve been doing in the last day, and give you recommendations of where you may want to return to including specific websites or apps.
There’s a section called Recent snapshots that will show you three locations you’ve visited previously, including websites. Then on the right you’ll get three apps. In the example from Microsoft, you can see three PowerPoint presentations followed by two Word documents and two tabs within its Edge browser.

There’s also a new navigation bar for all of Microsoft’s Recall features. This runs vertically along the left hand side of the UI, and it gives you access to the Feedback, Home, Settings, and Timeline options.
Don’t expect these features to rollout immediately as often Microsoft will test with its Windows Insiders for a couple of months before it lands on the final version of the software.
